Chemical peels have been quite a buzz term in the beauty world for a few decades now. Physicians and Medical Estheticians love having them in their arsenal as it is a great way to encourage cellular turnover, which tends to slow down as we approach each decade of life. Some popular “chemical” acids that are used in these cocktail blends include both AHA’s (alpha-hydroxy acids) and BHA’s (beta hydroxy acids). AHA’s are typically lactic, glycolic, and mandelic acid while BHA’s are salicylic acid. Each unique acid caters to certain Fitzpatrick skin types. For instance, mandelic acid is recommended for all skin tones, whereas glycolic acid is warned against using on Latin and African American skin tones as it can yield rebound pigmentation.
At MD Age Management, we choose to provide our patients with the best chemical peels available to only physician’s practices. Vivant Skincare, developed by Dr. Fulton, created a scientific-based and medically dispensed only line that is geared toward acne, aging, and hyperpigmentation. We feel confident in both the Pro Peel (for those who are pre-conditioned) and the Mandelic 30%, simply because of the science behind both formulations.
Our Estheticians, Mallory and Karen, have a wide array of knowledge and expertise to be able to ascertain which formulation is best for their patients. For those who have been “pre-conditioning” for 4-6 weeks, we recommend delving into the Pro Peel. What is unique about this peel is that it contains 4 different levels per treatment session. Level I being the mildest, going all the way to Level 4 which is the strongest. Based on the reaction that the client experiences, we are then able to back off or proceed with the number of layers with each level. On the other hand, the Mandelic 30% can be performed on every skin tone (Fitzpatrick 1-6) right off the street with no prior conditioning. What is wonderful about Mandelic Acid is that it is derived from bitter almonds, making it a milder and more tolerable AHA to all skin types. It can even be used in conjunction with dermaplaning or microdermabrasion for the ultimate glow!
