Beginning in the late 20’s and 30’s our facial features are oh so slowly changing. You may not notice these changes until you are in your 40’s and 50’s but they have been happening. Many of my clients swear that they woke up one morning and looked different…older… but believe me, these changes do not happen overnight. Our once high cheek bones seem to fall moving down and to the midline. We lose volume in our temples and in front of our ears that we may not notice because we rarely see ourselves from the side view. We also lose volume around the mouth and below the corners of the mouth that leads to wrinkling around the mouth and marionette lines. Volume loss over the entire face contributes to the appearance of loose skin of the face and neck skin.

The value proposition for aesthetic medicine treatments…whether it is botulinum toxins, facial fillers, laser treatments and light based therapies is, ” If I do this treatment, I will look more youthful and attractive.” Facial fillers such as Juvederm, Voluma, Restylane and Bellafill can address lost facial volume and restore the youthful contours of the face. Spend some time looking at actresses like Jennifer Lawrence, Jennifer Garner and Jennifer Lopez and you will appreciate how a face full of volume gives a face a more youthful appearance.

These facial fillers vary by composition, cost and how long the benefit of volume correction can expect to last. Some are better suited for treatment in certain areas of the face. Sculptra is another option for maintaining facial volume. It is not a filler per se, but Sculptra works by building your own collagen.  I use all the different products, Bellafill, Restylane, Voluma, Sculptra and Juvederm to address each client’s individual changes in facial volume based on anatomic changes in the deep tissues.

We can look at the discomfort of facial filler placement as a group as there is little difference among the fillers for comfort improvement. Most either come with or can be mixed with lidocaine that makes the placement of these fillers more comfortable. Another comfort improvement in filler placement is the use of micro cannulas that cause less tissue trauma and minimize bruising. Look for an upcoming blog that addresses what I do and what you can do to minimize bruising.
